China, Fujian Province, Chuxi Village, an earthen and wooden fortress home to members of the same Hakka family, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2008, UNESCO granted World Heritage status to Tulou's "Apartments", placing the buildings as outstanding examples of a tradition and building function illustrating a particular type of community and defensive community organization. . Fujian Tulou is "the most extraordinary type of Chinese rural dwellings" of the Hakka minority group and others in the mountainous areas of southwestern Fujian.
