This photograph was taken at the premiere of the French-German-Italian film "Cannabis" by Pierre Koralnik

We are on September 3, 1970 at the premiere of the movie Cannabis. Serge Gainsbourg, lead actor, signs the soundtrack of the film in collaboration with the arranger Jean-Claude Vannier. The film tells the story of an American gangster charged with drug trafficking (Gainsbourg) who falls head over heels in love with a young woman (Jane Birkin) and tries to redeem herself. Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin, however, did not fall in love on the set of this film, but two years earlier during the shooting of "Slogan" by Pierre Grimblat.

To meet them, the actress and the singer did not support each other

Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg meet in 1968 during the film Slogan in Venice. Jane is 22 years old and does not speak perfectly French yet, which annoys Serge Gainsbourg. Jane also tells Le Monde in 2017: "I found it complicated and arrogant during filming. He had no kindness towards me, he made me very uncomfortable. As the days go by, the atmosphere deteriorates on the set, and the producer Pierre Grimblat decides to organize an evening at the restaurant with the two actors and not to go there. During this evening, the current will pass between Gainsbourg and Jane who will declare « in one evening, the character had changed dramatically and I had fallen in love with him».

A love that will last 12 years

Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg spend 12 years together and even have a daughter whom they call Charlotte. But in the 80s, Gainsbourg gives way to Gainsbarre: the singer is dragged by alcohol and the night. It becomes unbearable for Jane who, tired of her excesses, decides to leave him in September 1980 by taking Charlotte and Kate (the girl she had from a first union with John Barry). The singer has never recovered from this painful break and will speak of it as his "first heartache".
