Louis Armstrong with Trummy Young (left) and Edmund Hall photographed by Guardian photographer Robert Smithies at Belle Vue Manchester in 1955 at the beginning of Bob's career with the paper. In a note, Bob said that the picture was taken on a 9cmx12cm P1200 plate with Vallinhof camera, Goertz Dogmar lens and a compound air-brake shutter at 1/25thsec @ f4.5. "This is the picture that established me as a Guardian photographer."
